Recently someone (call him Jef) presented me with a problem he had concerning his printer. every time something needed to be printed, he had to wait at least 10-15 seconds after hitting the print button for the printer menu to open. If something like this occurs once, i wouldn’t bother about it.

The thing is that he had to print a lot and as you can imagine such a situation manifests itself in a serious reduction of productivity.

The configuration on this machine was as follows: one local connected main printer for frequent use. There was also a network printer, originally shared on another machine, which is actually only used if the first printer would stop working.

The problem, however, was that the owner of the second printer had decided to change the name of his machine(pc) in the network at his convenience. A consequence of this action is that the share of his printer also changes and that this has to be updated in the network. It might be stupid, but since Jef never used that printer, he did not change the printer settings on his machine.

So every time Jef decides to print something, his machine starts looking for the shared printer that he will not find. This takes about 10-15 seconds and just like that Jef has to wait at least that long before he can even choose the printer he wants to use.

Since I updated the settings of his second printer, productivity has gone up again.
